Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs) – a digital permission to visit or transit through the UK – are being introduced for visitors to the UK who do not have a British or Irish passport. An ETA is now required for many nationalities that did not previously require a visa or other pre-approval for travel to the UK.
Starting 2 April 2025, travellers who travel visa-free will require an ETA to enter or transit/layover through the UK. It will be linked to passports electronically and permits travel to the UK but does not promise entry. The ETA is part of the UK government’s plans to strengthen the UK border through pre-approval and digitalisation.
Applying for an ETA is quick and simple. Visitors should apply in advance and find out when to do so on GOV.UK. An ETA costs £10 and permits multiple journeys to the UK for stays of up to six months at a time over two years or until the holder’s passport expires – whichever is sooner.
The ETA can be obtained directly by travellers on GOV.UK. Check if you need a UK visa here.
