As winter approaches, shorter days and bad weather mean reduced visibility for everyone on the road. Whether you're cycling, walking or driving, it’s crucial to remember the principle of "see and be seen". It isn’t just about looking out for yourself; it’s about respecting and being mindful of all road users, ensuring that everyone reaches their destination safely.
See - drivers, be alert
For those behind the wheel, winter visibility and road conditions demand extra caution. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at junctions: look out for cyclists before pulling out. Beware of distractions, watch out for other vulnerable road users and reduce your speed to give you more time to respond to any unexpected situations on dark, wet or icy roads.
Be seen - cyclists and pedestrians, make yourselves visible
Winter often means navigating darker mornings and evenings, so making ourselves visible is key. Cyclists, make sure that your lights are bright and working properly —both front and rear lights are essential. Wearing reflective clothing or accessories makes all the difference. For pedestrians, reflective armbands or even light-coloured clothing help drivers to see you sooner, giving them more time to react.
We all use the same roads. Let’s make this winter a safe season for the entire CERN community. It’s all about respect.
