Welcome to submission page of CERN openlab and MS/NMS summer student project proposals!
On this site we collect project all proposals for Summer students (MS/NMS, openlab) that are going to be hosted in the IT Department and other Departments (on openlab funds).
The CERN Member and Non-member state Summer Student programme welcomes around 300 summer students. The programme is either funded by central funds at CERN or by external sponsors for the non-member state programme. The IT Department have slots for 10 MS and NMS students. The students come free of charge to the groups.
The CERN openlab Summer Student programme usually welcome around 30 summer students. The students are spread across several Departments. The programme has three different funding mechanisms:
Full openlab funding - If your summer student project is related to an ongoing openlab project sponsored by an external partner (in any Department)
50/50 funding -Groups in the IT Department that are not connected to any of the openlab projects can get “extra” students funded out of the openlab or group material budget. The students come from the openlab pool of students.
Self funding - Groups outside the IT Department that are not involved in openlab projects can apply for an openlab summer student, however the funding must come from your respective group. (The group material budget code should be added to the project proposal). The cost of a summer student for 9 weeks is around 6000 CHF.
We kindly ask you to submit your proposals to any of the programmes before the 20th of January 2025. After the 20 January, we will provide a suggested distribution of submitted projects to be discussed by the IT management. Once we have a final list we will ask projects that have been selected for the MS/NMS programme to re-submit their proposals in the MS/NMS tool, following our instructions. Should we have more projects than we can host either in the openlab programme or in the MS/NMS, we will put these projects on the waiting list.
Access to the respective pool of students for the selection will be given once your project is accepted. Please note that all students have the same eligibility criteria and they are receiving the same kind of contracts (some variation on the length of contracts may occur) and they are all invited to attend all lecture programmes. Instructions regarding the selection procedure will be sent out by the respective coordinator of each programme, i.e. MS/NMS or openlab.
Please note that each supervising person can only submit one project per person.
